SUMMERTIME SPORTS OFTEN CENTER AROUND BASEBALL, TENNIS, GOLF, SOCCER. BUT AT A TWINS CITY PARK IT’S ALWAYS RUGBY SEASON. THIS WEEK’S FINDING MINNESOTA, JOHN LAURITSEN TAKES US TO COLUMBIA PARK WHERE YOU MAY BE SURPRISED TO HEAR THE RUGBY TEAM HAS BEEN SCRUMMING FOR DECADES. COACH, READY, SET. NICE RUN. EVERYBODY GETS TO TOUCH THE BALL AND TACKLE AND EVERYBODY HAS BEEN PLAYING IN VARIOUS POSITIONS TO REALLY GET INVOLVED. YOU GET HOOKED. Reporter: HOOK TODAY A SPORT THAT PLAYS A BIT LIKE SOCCER, BUT WITH THE — HOOKED LIKE A SPORT THAT PLAYS LIKE SOCCER, BUT YOU GET PADS. I ENJOY HITTING PEOPLE AND THE ROUGH PHYSICALITY OF THE SPORT. Reporter: IT’S BEEN A PART OF THE CLUB FOR 25 YEARS. BUT CLUBS HAVE BEEN AROUND THE TWIN CITIES SINCE THE 1960s. NOW THERE’S A BIT OF A YOUTH MOVEMENT. IN FACT NUMBERS ARE ACTUALLY GROWING FOR BOTH KIDS AND ADULTS. MY SON IS EIGHT. HE’S INTO IT AND HE PLAYS RUGBY BETTER THAN FOOTBALL. Reporter: RUGBY IS THE SPORT BRINGING THE WORLD TOGETHER. THERE ARE 50 ACTIVE PLAYERS ON THE TEAM. MANY OF THEM COME FROM COUNTRIES WHERE RUGBY IS KING. ON MY TEAM CURRENTLY FOR THE STARTING SIDE WE HAVE, I THINK THREE PEOPLE FROM FIJI, ONE FROM AUSTRALIA, THEN TWO GUYS FROM THE STATES. SOME GUYS PICK UP BASEBALL GAMES, YOU PICKED UP RUGBY? YES. SHOW UP TO ONE PLACE AND THEN HAVE A BALL AND JUST PLAY. Reporter: TELLEY SEAL GREW UP WHERE HIS DAD, UNCLES, PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE ELSE PLAYED RUGBY. EVERY DAY AFTER WORK AND SCHOOL, ALL THE COMMUNITY GET TOGETHER, THE YOUTH AT THE VILLAGE COME TOGETHER TO TALK LIKE THIS AND PLAY AROUND WHERE IT ALL STARTED. 30 SECONDS. LET’S GO. Reporter: WHICH IS WHY TELLEY FEELS RIGHT AT HOME AT COLUMBIA PARK ON A STEAMY JUNE NIGHT. ANYONE IS WELCOME TO GET IN ON THE SCRUM, INCLUDING REPORTERS. IF YOU’RE 35 OR OLDER YOU’RE CONSIDERED AN OLD BOY IN RUGBY. I’VE BEEN AN OLD BOY FOR A FEW YEARS? YES. THAT’S RIGHT, KEEP ON WALKING. EVERYTHING, GO, GO, GO. WALK IN THAT LINE UP AND MOVE ON THAT SIDE. Reporter: PRACTICES ARE EXHAUSTING. SCORING CAN BE A LITTLE COMPLEX AT FIRST. A TRY IS LIKE A TOUCHDOWN IN FOOTBALL, BUT INSTEAD OF SPIKING THE BALL IN THE END ZONE YOU PLACE IT OVER THE TRIZONE. IF YOU KICK FOR A CONVERSION THAT’S WORTH THREE POINTS. Reporter: SORT OF LIKE A FIELD GOAL. THEY PLAY GAMES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THERE ARE OCCASIONAL BUMPS AND BRUISES. THE WORSE INJURY WAS A CONCUSSION, ACTUALLY. A BROKEN NOSE, A FEW BROKEN TOES HERE AND THERE. MY SHOULDER. THEN THE NEXT WEEK IT WENT AWAY. Reporter: YOUTH PLAYERS PLAY FLAG RUGBY LIKE FLAG FOOTBALL. THE GOAL IS LIKE A LIFE LESSON TO WORK AS A TEAM WITH PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. JUST VERY GOOD FOR GETTING KIDS OUT THERE AND WORKING WITH OTHER CHILDREN OF THE SAME AGE. IT’S A GOOD SPORT OVERALL. Reporter: JOHN LAURITSEN WCCO 4 NEWS. THE COACHES SAY THE TEAM HAS FORMER FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND WRESTLERS, BUT SOME GUYS DIDN’T PLAY A SPORT BEFORE JOINING. PRACTICES ARE ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHTS FROM 6:00 TO 8:00 AT COLUMBIA PARK. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLUB OR ABOUT THEIR YOUTH CAMPS
