There’s no doubt that fight is going
to bring lots of positives for other fighters based here
in New Zealand. To rugby league now. An up and coming NRL star
in the making. Rayna Whakaari, 15, of Ngapuhi
and Tainui has been scouted
for the Sydney Roosters for the next two years. As Te Okiwa McLean reports Whakaari
also has a passion for rugby union. A young man making his dreams
a reality. Whakaari was scouted
at the NZ Maori League tournament in Hawera last year. He says by persevering anything
is possible. He also plays for RBHS’ 1st XV. He’s over the moon that his NRL
contract will allow him to finish his education in Rotorua and travel to Sydney for league
commitments during the holidays. The coach of the 1st XV says
Rayna was born an athlete. His family is his backbone
and he says he wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for his father. With a two-year
contract with the club, he will head to Australia during
school holidays for training camps. As they say, the bellbird is one
of the smallest birds in the forest, but is capable
of reaching the top. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere.
