[Music] how’s it going Georgia Tech this is the club and I’m your host Luke Tyrone Quinn today I had a chance to learn more about our GT rugby team it’s a phenomenal sport and I had a chance to speak with a cup of our athletes Daniel groves in Jake Thiemann they’re gonna be giving us a rundown about who they are what they do and what their sport / team is all about first here’s Daniel Georgia Tech rugby team we’re going on our 42nd year now since we were founded it feels more like a family and that’s what we are we have to work together to help beat other teams and just practice together and we do a lot of things together right this year we implemented rats and vets program which is sort of like a big little helping our rats out with classes and stuff I think text rugby team holds a special place because not many people know about it but those that do have a really great time we’re trying to get the word out every year people just don’t really know what it is and they don’t know that they’d be interested in it the best thing about rugby is the family I really like it freshman year coming in you don’t know many people you go right into the rugby team you start off you start hanging out with them a lot and right now I’m rooming with three other teammates with rugby you practice you have games and it’s a lot more coordinated and put together than just regular rec sports you have to really work together and you put in a lot more effort there’s a much bigger payoff since you all work together and win together we play other colleges in Georgia and Tennessee in Florida our conference is the South independent rugby conference and in Georgia we play case you George Southern than one or two teams from Florida and then Middle Tennessee State University and University of Memphis then we have playoffs in at the end of the year people have different personalities some freshmen that come up during Fassett you just like you go up and you don’t do this but you just they have the personality where you go up and push them and say hey join rugby and they’re like hell yeah let’s do it and then other freshmen you have to convince them they’re like I’m I think I’m too small like I’ve never heard of it and you just like point to yourself look at me I’m pretty skinny I play rugby and like we teach everything how to tackle how to pass the ball it’s it’s great it’s a steep learning curve for everybody usually but that’s what makes it more fun thank you for input Daniel no here’s Jake rugby was kind of founded off of soccer and then American football as we know it was founded based off of rugby so I kind of view it as like an intermediate step between the two sports it kind of combines both aspects from both of the sports and it’s just a really physical sport there’s no downs and there’s no plays like there are in football so as soon as you get tackled it’s the next man’s job to come pick up the ball and keep going the hardest thing about this sport is definitely the physicality I’ll never forget my first game when I got in and someone passed me the ball and I started running and I got tackled hard and it was kind of a rude awakening but it’s part of what makes this sport so fun is at the end of the day everybody’s beat up and everybody’s hurting so it kind of brings people together in a way and that we all kind of get beat up together and then get to go through something like that the team practices three days a week but we are encouraged to exercise as much as we can outside of practice I personally exercise about three more times a week usually with a lot of weights and also a lot of running because you need to be in good shape I think something special about Georgia Tech rugby is at the Brotherhood and I know it’s kind of a common term that’s used but the guys on the team are my best friends and it’s a really cool place it’s been cool ever since my freshman year just show up and instantly have best friends and like I said through the physicality of the sport you can really come together and get to know each other and we party together we go out together those guys will forever be my friends and I think that’s been a really cool part of the club so the rugby team does not have tryouts per se we just have kind of open practice and new people are always welcome to come and join everybody is always welcome to come out and practice our schedules on our website but just know that you need to be prepared to play a very physical sport if you’re going to come out but if you can stick around it is an absolute blast I always joke with people that rugby has been my place to go and just get my butt kicked it’s been a fun place to go get my head shoved in the dirt have coaches yell at me and that’s okay that’s the whole point of it that means I’m doing it well so it’s very important to have something like that in life that you can kind of go and be humbled and and not be good at something I think that’s really important so especially for like a Georgia Tech grad it’s important to go into the world and know that you don’t own the place you know you have something to prove I came into Tech and I thought that I might want to join a fraternity but I wasn’t ready for that level of a commitment and I came out and I tried the rugby team and after two hours of practice they were my best friends just instantly and I think that if you are curious about playing a new sport and you think that it sounds even a little bit interesting come on out try a practice come hang out with us and realize that these guys will be your lifelong friends we just had our Alumni Weekend and ten people showed up from the original team in 1975 they’re still best friends with each other and meeting up once a year is still the highlight of their year and I know that that’s going to be the same for me for more information on GT rugby team please visit their link we want to thank Daniel and Jake for giving up their time to come speak with us this is the club I’m your host Luke Tyrone Quinn and thank you for watching [Music] you [Music]
