In the semifinals of the NJCAA D1 Region XX
Tournament MC Raptors took on the Frederick Cougars. And these two teams knew each other well,
having played to a 2-2 tie just a couple of weeks ago. Frederick jumped out to a quick lead, but
the Raptors had plenty of chances to get on the board. MC’s Melanie Rodriguez gets past the defense,
but her shot is just wide. Minutes later off a set piece, MC’s Gabriella
Larios puts it on the doorstep for Sophie Couturier, but the ref waves off what looked
to be a goal. After Some bad luck produced an own goal,
MC was back at it, Elise Couturier sacrifices herself to get the ball to Ashley Zambrano,
she has a lane, but she’s clearly pushed as she shoots – there’s no foul called
– and MC comes up empty again. Moments later, Zambrano is again denied, this
time right on the doorstep. Two minutes later MC’s Keeper Nikole Grandez
with a nice stop to keep it close and then a minute later she does it again. Minutes later MC’s Eve San Martin with a
beautiful ball behind the defense, but both Zambrano and then Couturier are denied at
the goal mouth. Grandez then with a decisive move to cut off
another Frederick attack. San Martin then with a beautiful ball, behind
the defense, Zambrano again outraces everyone, but she’s clearly pushed in the box, no
foul, and again the Raptor are frustrated. The second half was more of the same. Frederick increased their lead, and MC had
their chances but just couldn’t break through. Isabella Nicolaou with a beautiful ball, but
it skips off the cross bar to deny MC yet again. And that was the story of the match as MC
falls in the Regional semis to Frederick. The loss ends their season, but the wheels
are, no doubt, already turning on a plan of attack for next year. For the Raptor Report, I’m Michael Brown
