‘Rugby on wheels’ a growing sport with Māori

It’s rugby on wheels. Roller derby
is a growing sport in NZ, but that hasn’t discouraged women
from our shores competing at the world champs
in the United States. And as Pere Wihongi discovered, a number of feisty Maori women
are in our national team known as the All Skates. These shoes on wheels drive Ngapuhi descendant
Corinna Hunziker’s passion. A passion that has led her to direct
a self-funded documentary following NZ’s national
roller derby team and their travels
to the world championship. The sport’s popularity may not
be widely recognised. But half of the national team’s
members are Maori. And just like the strength
of the team, Hunziker’s goal is to promote and foster NZers’ interest
in this sport. It’s the financial side
that is the main barrier, but Hunziker has found good fortune after six months of filming
her documentary. Last night her Pledge Me page
finally had reached its goal. Now, Hunziker can fly to Texas, USA, to shoot the final part
of her documentary, and she thanks everyone
who helped her on the journey. The national team leaves
for the championships on December 1 and the documentary
will be released next year. Pere Wihongi, Te Karere.
