Serena Williams vs Elina Svitolina US Open 2019 Semifinal | PREVIEW

Serena Williams is looking to reach her 10th
US Open final, while Elina Svitolina is vying for her first. I’ll breakdown this match-up, look extensively
into their previous meetings, and give my prediction of who I think will win, here on
GS Tennis News Today. To reach the semifinals Elina first took out
young American Whitney Osuigwe 61 75. She then faced another American, this one
a much more experienced player: Venus Williams taking that one 4 &4. In the next round she demolished countrywoman
Dayana Yastremska 62 60. In the round of 16, she was able to beat Cincinnati
champion Madison Keys 75 64. In the final 8, she faced Brit Jo Konta winning
64 64. Serena’s road to the semis started with
Sharapova as she pulverized her 61 61. It wasn’t so easy in the second round as
she was pushed to the brink by 17 year old compatriot Caty McNally but came out on top
winning 57 63 61. It was smooth sailing from then on for Williams,
as she beat Muchova 63 62, Petra Martic 63 64, and Wang Qiang 61 60. Serena and Elina have met a total of 5 times
with Serena leading their head 2 head 4-1. They haven’t faced each other since 2016
and this year they played twice. Elina currently has the last laugh as she
upset Serena in the Round of 16 of the Rio Olympics 64 63. Their last slam meeting was the French Open
of that same year with Serena taking a decisive 61 61 victory. Looking back at their 2016 Olympics meeting
which was on a hardcourt, Serena was not dominant on her serve and all and actually struggled
to hold. Elina on the other hand had much more ease
on serve as her slow-paced second serves troubled the American a great deal. Another thing I saw is that Serena didn’t
hit poorly ground stroke wise and was pretty solid. However, when Svitolina got that one extra
ball back and put it short in the court Serena struggled. In order for her to have an easier time this
match, Serena must first have a high first serve percentage. Against Elina at the Olympics this was a big
problem as by hitting more second serves, she allowed the Ukrainian more opportunities
at getting an upper hand in the rallies. Serena also needs to make sure that she doesn’t
rush her forehand for in that tight match versus McNally, she constantly rushed and
tried to go for too much. All she needs to do is keep steady and be
patiently aggressive. Speaking of forehands, Serena needs to go
after Elinas as its the less steady side. When she does go to the forehand Serena needs
to cover the deuce side because Svitolina rarely goes down the line on that wing. On the return side of things, Serena needs
to cover the wide serves as those are the Ukrainian’s favorites. This tournament she’s been burning her opponents
a lot with those serves so to get her out of her comfort zone, Serena needs to read
those effectively. To reach her maiden slam final Elina needs
to make sure that she moves Serena. Unlike before, she is comfortable when the
ball is struck down the middle but when forced to move laterally, shes not as affective. As I mentioned before Svitolina’s serving
has been stellar all tournament, and will need to stay that way tomorrow night. By serving like this it makes it harder for
Serena to break which in turn puts more pressure on the American to hold. It will be difficult for Elina to match Serena
pound for pound, so to extract more errors out of her she must defend well. In Rio, Elina scrambled to get ball after
ball after ball, and kept wearing Serena down mentally. To get Williams out of her calm she must do
this and make sure she makes a lot of her returns. In the Wimbledon final Halep was able to frustrate
Serena by simply making a lot of her first serve returns. By mixing up her return position and covering
Serena’s slice serve, she can have the same success as the Romanian. To close out my prediction i believe Serena
will take out Elina in three sets to reach her 2nd consecutive US Open final. I was weary about Williams’ chances as her
form post Sharapova wasn’t all that promising. However after watching her easily dispatch
of Wang Qiang in 45 minutes she’s made me eat my words. She had such a focus and calm about her that
was reminiscent of her 2014 title run and if she keeps that same mindset tomorrow i
find it extremely difficult for Elina to beat her. Though she was able to keep this way of thinking
100% against Wang I don’t see her keeping that same intensity for the whole match here. Elina has much more belief than Wang and is
extremely confident so it want be easy for Serena to get the win. Elina hasn’t gone the tournament without
losing a set for a reason.Svitolina’s scrambling and serving will at least get her set and
possibly more, depending on if Serena is tight or not. Bottom line if she continues to play the way
she did yesterday Serena will win. However if she plays how she did against McNally
for Muchova she’ll get sent home packing. Both Serena and Elina talked about their matchup in their press conference, and here’s what
they said about each other. Do you agree that Serena will win this match
or do believe Svitolina can replicate her Rio magic? Leave your thoughts in the comment section
