Shelford Murray breaks through on to the national rugby scene

Articles Blog

17-year-old Shelford Murray
of Te Rarawa was a student
at Kaitaia College last year. This year, he was offered
a full rugby scholarship to one of New Zealand’s
most exclusive schools, and today the Northlander has been named in the New Zealand
secondary schools squad. Raniera Harrison
has this story of hard work, determination,
and a little bit of luck. He’s a beast on the field,
and moving in the right direction. Meet Shelford Murray of Te Rarawa, and this year’s hottest property
on the 1st XV market, after making the move
from Kaitaia to Kings College to follow his dream. And now the dream of being named
in the NZ SS rugby training camps has been realised along with another two
of his Kings first XV teammates. All three of these Kings
1st XV stars have been named
in the train-on squad, however it is Shelford who has made real strides
in only his first year in Auckland. How you are on the field, should be different
to how you are off it. That’s Shelford. When he gets off the field,
he returns to being humble, and caring to all others around him. True to form, Shelford says
his successes aren’t his alone. All of our Maori children
should be given the opportunity to attend schools
such as Kings College to stand as leaders for their own
families in due course. We all stand as chiefs through your
achievements Shelford, smash them! Raniera Harrison, Te Karere.
